Dental Sealants

A no-drill raincoat for back teeth.

The short answer

Dental sealants are thin, tooth-colored coatings painted into the deep grooves of back teeth where most childhood cavities start. Application is quick, requires no drilling or numbing, and can significantly reduce cavities on permanent molars. We recommend sealants as soon as the 6-year and 12-year molars come in.

Why do molars need sealants?

Back teeth have deep pits and fissures that are narrower than a single toothbrush bristle. Food and bacteria get trapped there, which is why the majority of cavities in school-age kids appear on chewing surfaces.

Sealants smooth those grooves so they are easy to clean. We check them at every six-month visit and touch them up if needed.
