Is a Deep Cleaning a Scam? How to Know If You Really Need One

It is one of the most common questions we hear from patients who were told elsewhere they need “four quadrants.” The honest answer: it depends on numbers you can see for yourself.

The 4 mm rule

Healthy gum pockets measure 1–3 mm. At 4 mm and deeper, a toothbrush and a routine cleaning can no longer reach the bacteria living on root surfaces. That is the clinical threshold for scaling and root planing.

Ask to see the evidence

A trustworthy office will show you your pocket chart, point out bleeding sites and display X-rays that reveal bone levels. At Pacific Dental Group we put these on screen so you can see what we see.

What happens if you wait

Gum disease is usually painless until it is advanced. Bone that is lost does not grow back on its own, so treating early protects teeth you would otherwise risk losing.
