Sealants
At Pacific Dental Group, we understand that sometimes brushing and flossing your teeth is not enough to prevent plaque and tartar from accumulating on your teeth, especially in those hard-to-reach places. It’s difficult to clean the pits and grooves on your back teeth, especially for our younger patients. Dental sealants give your teeth the added protection they need against decay and cavities.
Dental sealants are a plastic coating that is applied to the pits and grooves found on the chewing surface of molars. The sealant protects teeth against bacteria that can cause decay. Sealants seal the teeth, and the pits and grooves are made smoother. Plaque is less likely to stay on the tooth.
The procedure is straightforward. First, the doctor will begin the treatment by carefully cleaning your teeth. Next, the top surface of the tooth is sanded slightly for the sealant to adhere. Each tooth is rinsed and dried thoroughly. The sealant is painted directly on the tooth, and a curing light helps to harden the coating.
Sealants are recommended for children as a preventive measure against tooth decay once the permanent teeth have erupted.
